I have a 65 lb - 6 year old and we use a Burley solo for gear and a adams trail a bike. I would go for the brakes, but another issue came up and that is weight of the trail a bike. With my daughter in tow, the weight of the trail a bike is more than the weight of my bike. This can cause some interesting handling issues. The trailer does not seem to have much of an effect.
