The dilema

The question now is how to configure my bike. I ride a mountain bike and last year did fine pulling both boys in a Burley trailer. This year they will top the scale with a combined weight of (80lbs), plus trailer (10lbs), plus me and my bike. That's a lot of weight to pull up hills... Also, I think my now 4 year old could help with pedaling. I've looked at a Bike Friday tandem or triplet which I think would be the best option right now. The company has a great reputation and the bike can be easily taken apart and put in the back of my van or even flown to another location. Plenty of people have pulled trailers behind their Fridays so that would certainly not be an issue. Unfortunatly, it's out of the budget.
So, the question now is, "what do I do?" I'll list my options below, if you think of any alternatives feel free to comment.

1. Buy a Burley Piccilo: It costs less and will allow my son to pedal. It is stable and strong enough to pull the trailer behind. Disadvantages: it will be another 17lbs to pull up a hill.

2. Buy and Adams Tandem: This will allow both boys to pedal and will only weigh 15lbs. Disadvantages: the hitch is not as stable or durable. With no trailer, neither boy will be able to rest or nap as we ride.

Sounds great! I have a 65 lb - 6 year old and we use a Burley solo for gear and a adams trail a bike. I would go for the brakes, but another issue came up and that is weight of the trail a bike. With my daughter in tow, the weight of the trail a bike is more than the weight of my bike. This can cause some interesting handling issues. The trailer does not seem to have much of an effect. I think that the panniers will really help.
