Delay!

Grrr... three days of absolutely beautiful weather and a surprise chance to go down to Boston and check out the paths and what happens? I get Pink Eye! Biking with two small children is a challenge with two eyes, obviously I wasn't about to try it with only one. So, instead I'm sitting inside my house, hiding from the wonderful, warm sunshine griping about the unfairness of chance.
In an attempt to look on the bright side I went over my list of needed gear. I'm wondering what sort of tools/spare parts I should carry with me? I'm planning rides of 30 miles or less, all in rural areas. I know spare tubes would be good, a set of levers, and a patch kit. Is there a small book of basic bike repair I should get or any other tools or parts to carry with me? What are your thoughts?
